Who Doesn’t Want More Joy?Some things change, but some things will forever remain the same.
We bought a new-slightly-used car this past weekend and can I just say how much I love it! I am not a car person, but this vehicle makes me want to go on a really long road trip, roll down the windows and play really fabulous music.
Which brings us to today’s post.
Our new ride has a 6 cd disc player in it. Despite streaming our music at home, I have sentimentally held onto an impressive collection of cd’s that were purchased as far back as the early 90’s.
As I sifted through them, my curiosity was peaked by one elegantly labeled lalala Lisa with a black sharpie marker. I had no recollection of the music that was on this cd but I instantly felt excited to find out. I knew it was from the era where I was still a single woman living in the city when i actually went out dancing.
I loaded it in the car before the morning school commute and it did not disappoint. I was singing and car dancing and grinning ear to ear as my kids expressed deep gratitude for the tinted windows in our car.
I was absolutely delighted when an old favourite of mine came on, Bjork!
We need to have more fun…seriously…
This morning was the perfect reminder of how we can connect to our joy in the mayhem of our day-to-day life my going old school.
Three Quick Tips To Increase Your Joy
-
Listen to the music you loved when you were younger
And by younger I simply mean before all of your responsibilities slyly remodelled your life into one that wreaks of practicality.
You have free access to dozens of playlists on apps like Google Play Music or Spotify. Or perhaps you subscribe to Apple Music.
Or perhaps you are like me and you have the original album for Purple Rain kicking around somewhere.
Sing, lip sync, dance, laugh and you will instantly have cultivated joy!
2. Up-level Throw Back Thursday
Forget about posting old photos and physically do something that you loved to do when you were young. Maybe it was an instrument you played or a team sport that you were on. Perhaps you loved going to movies by yourself or your heart sings when you put brush to canvas.
Just dooiittttit! Mark it on the calendar and make it happen.
3. Put Fun on Your Schedule First
We love our habits and structure. Heck, as a coach who supports my clients to professional and personal success, I teach my clients how to implement new systems to increase the structure and support in their lives.
You must schedule the fun first or trust me, the only priority the fun takes, is being the first thing you forget to do.
Just like women don’t like the idea of scheduling sex with their husbands, scheduling fun can seem, well, very un-fun. But just like the sex, a little bit on the calendar is better than none at all. (Qualifier: The scheduled sex requires both parties to achieve their “goals” by the end of the “meeting”. Just saying…)
The flowers are blooming, the sun is shining and today is the perfect day to take action.
