The Story-Driven Business: Why Facts Tell but Stories Sell

Once upon a time, very, very early in the morning, I was asked to deliver an Education Moment at a business networking meeting. Picture this: a room full of motivated entrepreneurs, sipping coffee as the sun rose, ready to learn how to grow their businesses and make meaningful connections. I was honoured and excited to speak on something I’m deeply passionate about, storytelling.

Here’s how I began:

Once upon a Time very, very early in the morning at an enchanting lawn and tennis club, nestled within the heart of Vancouver, leaders in business gathered every Tuesday morning drinking copious amounts of coffee and somehow figuring out how to unmute themselves on Zoom…”

The room laughed, transporting people out of their busy minds and spreadsheets, and into a narrative. And that’s exactly what storytelling does—it invites people in.

Storytelling Is a Tool for Connection

We live in a world saturated with information. Everyone is pitching, promoting, and posting. But when you share a real story, people stop scrolling. They lean in. They remember.

That’s the magic.

As I continued my talk, I shared how the very first referral I received from a new networking group I’d joined,  came the day after a 10 minute presentation I gave, and it wasn’t because I shared stats and services. It was because I shared a story, vulnerably weaving a narrative of my own journey with client success stories.

People connected. It resonated. It mattered.

That day, someone even came up to me with tears in their eyes, thanking me for what I shared. I walked away with referrals yes, but more importantly, I had built trust and credibility in a way that data alone never could.

The Psychology Behind Why It Works

Why is storytelling so powerful? Because it activates emotion. When we hear a story, our brains simulate the experience. It’s called neural coupling, a fancy way of saying that stories allow the listener to feel as though they’re living the events themselves.

Stories build empathy, create trust, and help people remember what matters most.

Whether you’re:

– Pitching your service
– Delivering a keynote
– Writing your website copy
– Or simply introducing yourself

Leading with story will always set you apart.

How to Tell Better Stories in Business

Not sure how to start? Here are a few tips:

1. Lead with a moment: Zoom in on a specific time, place, or feeling.
2. Share the struggle: Don’t just talk about your success; show what you overcame.
3. Focus on transformation: What changed? What’s possible now?
4. Be real: Authenticity is magnetic. Don’t aim for perfection, rather aim for being human.
5. Tie it back to your mission: Make it relevant to your audience’s needs and desires.

And remember: you don’t have to be a polished speaker or a novelist. You simply need to be you to be the best storyteller you can be.

You Are the Story

Your story, the one that includes your hard-won lessons, your “aha” moments, your quiet breakthroughs, that’s your most valuable asset.

No one else has your story.

And when you learn to tell it well, you don’t just grow your business.

You move people.

You build connection.

You leave a legacy.

So next time you’re asked to share about your work—on a stage, in a Zoom room, at a coffee shop, don’t lead with the what. Lead with your why. Because facts tell. But stories? Stories sell.
